A Right Leg Gone Wrong

As many of you may have heard, Sylvia has a little accident on a slide last week and broke her right leg. According to the orthopedic specialist who set the bone the fracture was minor and should heal with no long term effects. She has already adapting to her cast (temporary pink seen below) and is teetering around the living room, eating messy meals and hugging Rex.

Our goal over the next four weeks is to keep the cast from getting too funky and stinky. That goes for the kid too, as baths are out for a while. With marathon training out for a bit we've moved to more resrtained activities, including coloring. Sylvia finds the crayons intriguing both as means to an artistic end and as snacks.

The zoo is also in bounds.

See lions are big.

Help for a Colleague and her Family

This evening at the dinnertable is a little different.

My coworker Amie and her husband Harper recently welcomed their daughter Nari into this world. At almost the same time Harper learned he has ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease). ALS is hard on those who have it and hard on those who love them. Treatment is expensive and time consuming.

To help Amie and Harper as they launch a family and strive to heal, their friends and colleagues have begun a drive to gather donations of support. One way we are doing this is by launching a "Red Wigs on Bikes" tribute that will wend its way through Portland on October 2nd. Each participant pledges to seek donations from their community to help offset some of Harper and Amie's financial distress and let them focus on healing.

If you would like to sponsor me on my ride next week please make your donation in one of two ways:

1. Check made out to Harper and Amie Bates. (Mail to me. I will give it directly to them on Oct. 2)

2. Visit the website set up for them: www.harperandamie.com. There is a paypal link.

Any amount is welcome.

Abrazos fuertes to my family and friends.
